WAG On the Road: SP-arte 2015

This week WAG is on the road journeying to two international fairs — Dallas Art Fair and SP-arte in Brazil. From sneak peeks at the fairs to touring private collections and more, WAG is taking you inside the immersive experiences at both Dallas Arts Week and the largest international fair in Latin America, SP-arte.

Thursday marked the opening of the eleventh annual Sao Paulo International Art Fair, with nearly 150 galleries and artists on display in the historic Oscar Niemeyer building dating to 1957. The five-day fair is packed with exhibitions, but also includes separate tracks highlighting authors and new book releases, curator and artist talks and more. Exhibition openings at Sao Paulo galleries and museums are also a draw, with an array of openings taking place across the city during the fair.

We found much to admire during our preview of SP-arte. Standout galleries David Zwirner, Lisson and more didn’t disappoint, with works from artists like Dan Flavin, Bridget Riley and Richard Serra. We even spied works by Ai WeiWei and Olafur Eliasson at Berlin’s neugerriemschneider. Our favorites included Jose Damasceno’s Monitor/Crayon from Galeria Fortes Vilaça, works by Pascale Tayou at Galerie Continua, and works by Yayoi Kusama and Richard Serra from David Zwirner.  View more of our favorites below.
