WAG curates art program for new Legacy Community Health location
Legacy Community Health announced the grand opening of its 29th clinic in Southeast Texas that offers high-quality health care to low-income patients. The 16,900-square-foot campus is part of the Fifth Ward Community Redevelopment Corporation’s larger revitalization project in the area.
A commissioned mosaic by Reginald Adams, known for his award-winning murals and art installations in Houston’s historic neighborhoods, will be installed on an exterior wall of the building. Adams’ mural represents the themes of healing and wellness that Legacy exemplifies in the services it provides to the Fifth Ward community. Adams will engage community volunteers in the production of the mural, which will be installed at the end of June 2017.
The Weingarten Art Group curated and managed the project.
Two other local artists – Jesse Lott and Tony Parana – will have art on exhibit inside the clinic.
The grand opening of the building is 11:00 am- 2 pm on Saturday, June 3. Remarks by Caldwell, Mayor Sylvester Turner and other elected officials, Payton, and Rev. Harvey Clemons will begin at 11:30am, followed by a ribbon cutting, building tours, and meet-and-greets with the artists.
“We are humbled to be a part of the Lyons Avenue Renaissance plan,” said Katy Caldwell, CEO of Legacy Community Health. “The new campus will enable us to better meet the growing demand for high-quality, affordable health care in the area – and to do so with services all under one roof in a welcoming space that reflects the community.”
The Fifth Ward is a historically underserved area when it comes to education, health care, and employment, according to data from the City of Houston. Legacy’s new location at 3811 Lyons Avenue replaces the health center’s prior facility in the same neighborhood that opened a decade ago.
