Urban landscape as an art canvas: KHOU covers Art Blocks public art project

It’s a big weekend in Houston for basketball fans with the Final Four in town. Those coming in for the game have an added colorful bonus to their trip — Downtown District’s Art Blocks.

In conjunction with Downtown’s current transformation, the Weingarten Art Group and Houston’s Downtown Management District came together to create Art Blocks, a series of outdoor art installations located in the 900-1100 blocks on Main Street, otherwise known as Main Street Square.

The installations will remain up for a year, leaving pedestrians and visitors time to enjoy the elaborate works of art amongst the hustle and bustle of Downtown Houston.

WAG serves as curator of the program and sought out the talented artists for this unique project. The city is hoping the art pieces will impress visiting sports fans, among others.

“Without a doubt we’re using the Final Four and Super Bowl as those anchor dates,” Angie Bertinot, Downtown District marketing director, said. “Ultimately, we are really doing this for downtown and our downtown stakeholders.”

KHOU Channel 11’s Shern-Min Chow covers the story in this segment. Or watch the report below:
