Houston Chronicle on Daily tous les jours: Hello, Trees! turns voices to light and music

Molly Glentzer, Houston Chronicle’s Senior Writer and Critic, Arts & Culture, spotlights one of WAG’s projects at Discovery Green, Downtown Houston’s main green space. The installation, titled “Hello Trees! A Walking Serenade,” is by Montreal collective Daily tous les jours. The creative group is an interaction design studio with a focus on participation – empowering people to have a place in the stories that are told around them.

Molly writes:

What might a human voice sound like if it were turned into music or look like if it were translated to light?

That’s the fun of “Hello, Trees! A Walking Serenade,” a new interactive light and sound installation that will add some sparkly fun to the festivities of this year’s Frostival at Discovery Green, Nov. 18-Feb. 25.

Designed by the Montreal  studio Daily tous les jours, “Hello, Trees!” was inspired by the century-old live oaks of the park’s Brown Foundation Promenade.  At each end of the archway, visitors will speak into input stations and see their messages translated into light patterns that travel along the arches. As the light reaches the base of each arch, the original voice input is gradually transformed into a melody; and the meeting of messages triggers special effects that the artists refer to as “a crowd-sourced concerto.”

This Weingarten Art Group curated and project-managed installation is Discovery Green Conservancy’s first original temporary commission for the park.
