The exhibition “Salvation is my heart on display” is the first of Houston Endowment’s Jones Artist Awards Program, which showcases artists who call Houston home. Curated by Weingarten Art Group, this program reflects the diverse stories and perspectives of our region and lifts emerging artistic talent.

Artists selected for this inaugural exhibition are Raul Rene Gonzalez, Jakayla Monay, Shavon Morris, and Jessica Phillips, and the title of the exhibition is excerpted from artist Jakayla Monay’s personal narrative about her artwork.

Gestures of embrace, images of togetherness, and depictions of people in their homes and other places of comfort are featured using photography, painting, ceramics, and printmaking.

Each work is imbued with deep emotional energy, focusing on tender, personal moments of connection that serve as sources of healing and renewal. Artworks address issues of racism, colorism, parenting, and the complexities of human interaction.
