“Memory is the seamstress, and a capricious one at that,” Virginia Woolf writes in Orlando, running her needle in and out, joining fragments that logic would keep apart. Memory does not record; it stitches, cutting what it keeps and seaming it into something new. The artists in this exhibition make that work visible.
Across painting, sculpture, assemblage, and cut canvas, remembered places and gathered materials are pieced back together: northern landscapes, family land, gardens, bayous, and the discarded fabric of city streets. For some, the seam is literal, binding personal and collective histories through sewing, quilting, and collage. For others, it is the distance between a place observed and a place remembered, distilled through paint. What emerges is never a faithful record but always a new whole, an invitation to consider how transformation is itself a way of remembering.
