The delicate nature of Papel Picado is imbued with rich content and meaning in Guadalupe Hernandez’s solo exhibition, “Con Cariño,” the second in the 2025 Jones Artist Awards at Houston Endowment. The title, which translates to “with love” or “with care,” reflects on his parents’ journey and sacrifices with profound fondness and deep respect.
Guadalupe meticulously hand-punches his designs into kozo and mulberry paper using techniques inspired by the traditional Mexican folk art of Papel Picado. His process is labor and time-intensive and uses chisels and punches to drive blades through stacks of paper. His method — traditional to Papel Picado — mirrors the physicality and repetitive nature of his parents’ work and is an act of devotion.
“Con Cariño” is simultaneously sentimental and celebratory, honoring Guadalupe’s heritage and family. It invites viewers to reflect on the powerful connections between generations and relates to a broader narrative of migration, resilience, and family devotion. Through this series, Guadalupe offers a poignant tribute to his parents and their enduring legacy.
