“Atlas” by renowned artist Jen Lewin is the latest temporary art installation curated and managed by Weingarten Art Group for Discovery Green. The installation features 24 handcrafted, interactive moth sculptures suspended from the trees of Discovery Green, which respond with dynamic light and sound to visitors walking beneath them. By day, the moths’ intricate wing patterns are revealed, and by night, they come alive with the glow of UV light.
Each sculpture represents an endangered North American moth species, highlighting the vital role these creatures play in the natural lifecycle of plants and trees in the region and emphasizing the urgent need for preservation.
Jen Lewin is the inaugural Lead Artist for Art Lab, a mentorship program created by Discovery Green and Weingarten Art Group. Art Lab aims to reshape the landscape of public art in Houston by supporting local artists, fostering diversity, and spurring innovation within our community. As the program’s first mentor, Jen provided invaluable hands-on experience to the first group of Art Lab Fellows, guiding them in creating interactive public art and preparing their own designs for the public realm.
