“Invisible Music” by Steve Parker is a vibrant and colorful installation at City Place in Spring, TX. A symphony of sculptures float on the water, playing an ever-changing set of musical compositions, while others are nestled in the green space by the trails, inviting viewers to create their own music through interaction.

Utilizing ambient music, natural soundscapes, and deep listening practices, the installation encourages viewers to listen closely to the natural world and appreciate its subtle (and sometimes imperceptible) sounds.

The bold colors and playful shapes of the sculptures evoke the illustrations of Dr. Seuss and the design style of Memphis Milano. Affixed to the brightly-painted wooden bases are reclaimed brass instruments which funnel the music, creating an ensemble in the water. The musical content draws from compositions by the experimental French composer Erik Satie (1866-1925), arranged by Steve Parker, along with natural soundscapes from Texas. An interactive chordal element in the land-based sculptures complements the music played by the floating sculptures.

“Invisible Music” is the second in a series of temporary installations that Weingarten Art Group curates and manages across this 2,000 acre community in partnership with Harris County Improvement District 18 and the developer CDC Houston. This installation will be on display July through September.
