    Chun Hui Pak

  • Date

    June 2017

Year of the Rooster presents three views of an origami rooster: a profile view looking left, heralding the new year; another looking right, saying goodbye; and a view of the flattened decorative paper with geometric patterns formed by the folds.

Korean-born, Texas-based artist Chun Hui Pak frequently uses origami as inspiration for her oil-on-canvas paintings. By using this source material and tromp l’oeil techniques, she hopes to spark the viewer’s appreciation for the ancient art.

The installation is part of the Main Street Marquee, a billboard-sized canvas on the building face above the Main Street Market in Downtown Houston. The temporary art project, which is curated and project managed by Weingarten Art Group, adds to Art Blocks Houston in an effort to revitalize meaningful areas of Downtown Houston.
